The blocks around Stanford contain some of the most expensive casual food in America, largely because they can. But the good cheap places have not all been driven out — they have just stopped being on the main street. All five of these are within a fifteen-minute drive of campus, and at all five, two people can eat well for under $50 before tip.

  1. Number 1: El Chalán

    East Palo Alto

Peruvian rotisserie chicken with three sauces, served with rice and a sharp salad for $17 a half bird. The green sauce is the reason to come and they will sell you a container of it. Cash preferred, seating limited, worth the drive.

  2. Number 2: Dumpling Hour

    Midtown Palo Alto

Forty handmade dumplings for $26, which is an absurd number in this ZIP code. The pork and chive are the ones to get; the vegetarian filling is under-seasoned. Order ahead — the queue at 6:30 is not worth it.

  3. Number 3: Sandwich Committee

    Menlo Park

A serious sandwich shop with eleven options and no soup, no salads and no wraps. The muffuletta is $15 and feeds two people who are not being precious about it. Closes at 3 p.m. sharp.

  4. Number 4: Injera House

    Mountain View

The $24 vegetarian combination is the single best value in this guide: seven stews, unlimited injera, and enough left over for lunch the next day. Bring people who are willing to eat with their hands.

  5. Number 5: Kettle & Grain

    Downtown Palo Alto

The only entry actually on University Avenue, surviving on a counter-service model and a menu of four grain bowls. Not exciting, consistently good, and the one place here you can get in and out of in twenty minutes at lunch.
